So, let’s kick this blog off right… I’d like to discuss the new Doctor in the Tardis. Number 11. Matt Smith. I like him, a lot. I’m a die-hard Whovian and fell right back into Tom Baker territory with Tennant, although I fell back in love with the show period with Ecceleston. That being said, I’m always skeptical and excited when a regeneration occurs. Especially one so young. I wasn’t sure what to expect and I’ve really been surprised. Here’s my reasons:
- He’s new and refreshing, but not too new. He channels Tennant ever so slightly in his physicality and yet brings his own spin. I may venture to say I even see a bit of Troughton in him. I believe that Troughton was once told to envision The Doctor as a ‘cosmic hobo’ and I feel that in Mr. Smith.. “OK, what have you got for me this time?”
- Awesome quotes, already. And quotes that make me feel small compared to his awesomeness…
“I’m supposed to climb in after it with a screwdriver and a torch, and assuming I survive the radiation long enough and assuming the ship doesn’t explode in my face, do something incredibly clever which I haven’t actually thought of yet. That’s my day, that’s what I’m up to. Any questions?”
- He’s sincere and jokey at the same time, like the Doctor should be.
- He does dark well.
- Suspenders and bow tie. ’nough said.
All this taken into account, there’s the other question of Moffat taking over as head writer. Yes, I LOVED Blink, and yes The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances was my favorite episode(s) ever, but its’ a whole new ball game when you’ve got a new writer and a new Doctor…
The Eleventh Hour, brilliant. The Beast Below, classic Who. Victory of The Daleks, meh. The Time of Angels, awesome. Flesh and Stone, easy out, but good. The Vampires of Venice, fun. Amy’s Choice, throwback. The Hungry Earth and Cold Blood, intriguing with an updated alien throwback. Since I’m in the US, that’s all I’ve got so far.. but I will tell you, I can’t wait for the next journey.
So, basically, I’m totally digging the new Doc (can I call him that?). I’ll be watching all season and can’t wait to see what exactly what the Pandorica opens.

I agree with you about Matt Smith. Best Doctor since Tom Baker. I must confess I was sick of Tennant by the end. I found he tried to hard to achieve an eccentricity which Smith seems to have naturally. This new season has reignited my love of the show in a way it hadn’t with Eccleston and Tennant.
I’m in the UK, and ahead of you in episodes. All I’ll say is, it gets even better. 😉
